Front Coil Spring Spacer Lift Explanation

So... you purchased a new McBay Performance front coil spring spacer lift kit for your 2WD truck or car. It's a solid cast aluminum horse-shoe shaped part and it's only about an inch thick. Your looking at them wondering, "Is this gonna raise my vehicle 2-1/2 to 3 inches?" The answer for most vehicles is YES. (There are exceptions and we will get to that a little later.)

First, a little front suspension education. Your vehicle has what is called a (SLA) short-long control arm (a-arm) or is also known as an unequal length double wishbone front suspension. The upper control arm is shorter than the lower control arm. This design creates an unequal ratio and is not 1:1 when adding length to the coil spring. On average, the lift amount is 2-1/2 to 3 times greater than the thickness of the spacer. Example: Adding a 1 inch thick spacer will lift the vehicle 2.5 to 3 inches.

Most spacers mount underneath the coil spring (some are on top, but only a few) and follow the same coiled design as the end of the spring. Once in place, into the control arm, the spring tension is so great that the spacer will never move from its spot until it (if ever) gets removed.

Exceptions to the lift amount rule: When the vehicle has a straight axle with coil springs it becomes close to a 1:1 ratio. Trucks with a Diesel, extended or crew-cabs will not get as much lift as a single-cab with a 6-cylinder. Same goes for cars with a big-block vs. a 6-cylinder.

So there you have it. Now you know why the spacer thickness has nothing to do with the amount of lift. Please feel free to stop by the McBay Performance web store to get your lift.

    1. Sometimes longer shocks or shock extenders are needed. You will need an alignment after the spacer lift kit has been installed.

    1. Hey Tanner,
We have had many customers have shops install front coil spring spacers so I do not know why any shop wouldn't.

    1. Hi Bruce,
Sorry, we do not recommend stacking the spacers or putting two on the same coil spring.

  5. i have a b 2500 and raised back 8 " after driving 10 miles oil pressure drops off because of angle will these help me and have you ever heard of that happening

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hi Ken. I have never heard of something like that happening but it sounds plausible. If the front to rear angle is what is causing the oil pressure drop then a set of front lift spacers should help since it will bring the front of the truck up more level with the rear.

  7. I installed the 1 inch spacers under front springs on my 1964 Chevy II.
I only got 1 inch lift.

  10. How do you install this spacer. Does the spring come out then the spring sits on top or are this tapped into the springs bottom coil?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The spacer is either mounted under or on top of the spring depending on the application. The spring will either need to be compressed to get the spacer in place if there is enough room or in some cases the lower ball joint will have to be disconnected to drop the lower control arm to put the spacer in place.

  12. I have a 2006 GMC Sierra 2WD and I was curious if these should be placed on top or bottom of springs for the full 3inch lift? And do you know if I'll need a shock extender?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The kit can be placed on top or under the coil spring but most people install them under. If your 2006 is a extended cab pickup then yes you will need a shock extender set.

    1. Hi there,
You might need longer shocks or a shock extender. That is all you will need besides an alignment after the kit has been installed. Here is a link to the shock extenders. http://www.mcbayperformance.com/2_SHOCK_STUD_EXTENDER_SET_p/13-6501_13-6521.htm

  22. We do have front spacers for the 66 Impala. (http://www.mcbayperformance.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=1513-1516) They mount under the spring and you will not need anything else except an alignment after the kit has been installed.

  24. I am interested in installing these on my 1996 ram 1500 2wd extended cab. From hubcap to fender, there is about a 2 and a quarter inch difference. From reading this, because its the 5.2L and ext cab, I should go for the largest spacer. I am hoping to not need extended shocks or anything else. In your experience, do you think that will get me the level fit, and will I need any other parts? Thank you.

  25. Yes I would recommend our largest spacer and our front 3/8" stud shock extenders.
